He actually had a large rearing operation, and was featured in many magazine articles at the time. It wasn't just Fish Lo-K-Tors Carl was into. The ad below appeared in popular fishing magazines around the early 1980s.
Berkley Trilene was one of the earliest brands of nylon fishing line to be marketed and promoted to anglers in places like the Boston Store's Fishing News. Here's a promotional pack of their saltwater line, which I haven't been able to track down an approximate date for yet.
